Surf Life Saving Australia
Dexion has been involved in Surf Life Saving in Australia for a number of years. We applaud the dedication and commitment average Australians make to the well-being of others every weekend. Currently, we provide financial support to two surf clubs - Long Reef on Sydney's Northern Beaches and Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast.
For nearly 100 years, Australia's trained life savers have been keeping our beaches safe. In that time they have rescued more than 500,000 people and provided first aid to a million others. Of Surf Life Saving Australia's 113,000 members 34,000 actively patrol our beaches.
As well as providing surf rescue services around the country, Surf Life Saving Australia is also a significant provider of education services. At any one time around 40,000 'nippers' are taught basic surf safety skills, plus trained lifesavers visit schools around Australia.
A new study has found that over 480 people would drown on our beaches each year, and a further 300 would be permanently incapacitated as a result of accidents in the surf, if not for the efforts of Australia's surf lifesavers. Despite the efforts of the surf lifesavers over 50 people still drown each year around Australia's massive coast line. The fact that it would otherwise be more than eight times that amount had there not been surf lifesaving services provided provides a stark demonstration of the core community service provided by Surf Lifesaving Australia.
