Environmental, Social and Governance Updates from Dexion

Smart sustainable warehouse storage solutions for your business and your corporate responsibility policies

dexion storage facility

As shareholders prioritise corporate governance, companies face mounting pressure to align with ESG-focused suppliers.

Greener warehouse storage solutions start with the manufacturer.  Dexion’s “smarter-thinking solutions” address storage needs and underscore our dedication to environmental protection. So, if your procurement team seeks a supplier committed to sustainability, trust Dexion to deliver.

Here, we outline recent environmentally-focused initiatives, policies, and updates that contribute to Dexion’s efforts to improve environmental practices within our supply chain.

1. LEED Gold Certification

Dexion’s Malaysia Smart Hub facility is on track to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold status. The world’s most widely used green building rating system, LEED certification considers the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

Contributing features and processes within our Malaysia facility include:

  • Building design: From aluminium louvres encouraging natural ventilation and light to high-performance glass curtain glass walls, double-skin roofing systems, solar panels, sensor taps and LED lighting, Smart Hub lives up to its name. The building now maintains an annual CO2 avoidance of 526 tonnes, which is the equivalent to the absorption of 22,372 trees a year.
  • Stormwater management: A 570m3 capacity tank controls the quality and quantity of rainwater runoff, prevents soil erosion and reduces the risk of flooding.
  • Biophilia: All-around perimeter landscaping encourages a sense of well-being.
  • The 5S methodology (sort, set in order, shine, standardise, and sustain): Creates a clean, efficient, and functional work environment.
  • Paperless environment: Cloud-based systems, digital CCTV management, digital Visitor Management System, team softphones and a clean desk policy reduce our reliance on paper.

2. Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) Compliance

Dexion completed a rigorous 4 Pillar SMETA Audit, establishing new and ground-breaking industry benchmarks that set us apart from competitors.

One of the most widely-used and distinguished social audits in the world, SMETA assesses labour standards, health and safety, environment and business ethics. The SMETA assessment mirrors our Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, highlighting our commitment to mitigating environmental and social risks for a sustainable future.

3. GECA-Certified Products

All Dexion commercial products have undergone comprehensive requirements to receive Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) Certification. GECA’s ecolabel provides independent assurance that our products are better for the environment.

4. Manufacturing and Carbon Footprint Reduction

Through sustainable manufacturing processes, Dexion minimises our production process’s environmental effects. Efficient methods, waste reduction and circular economy principles help us create a more sustainable supply chain.

  • Powder Coating: New painting processes have reduced waste and improved application efficiencies. Environmental management system standards influence how we source powder coatings.
  • Recycled Materials: We collect and recycle scrap steel or aluminium from the manufacturing process.
  • Cleaning Wastewater Discharge: We treat and purify wastewater in accordance with the Department of Environment. Two Competent Individuals are on-site and certified to manage the effluence.

5. Energy-efficient Equipment

Dexion has introduced a bespoke paintline to increase production efficiency and manage environmental considerations. The facility is a smart use of space (just 10% of the factory footprint), can complete 550 beams per hour, results in lower powder wastage and treats water for clean discharge.

The facility also uses an electric forklift fleet with zero emissions and pollutants, workplace noise reduction and good longevity.

Dexion Code of Ethics

Dexion does not engage or support child labour. We prohibit the employment of children under the age of 16. Although we do offer work experience to students between the age of 16-18 years old, we do so under the strict provisions of engagement as outlined in DLP04 Child Labour Policy. Dexion Certifications

The Dexion Environmental Management System is maintained to AS/NZ ISO14001:2016 (ISO14001:2015 Certification).

Dexion has obtained the renewal of ISO9001:2015 Certificate number 008295, which remains valid until 2026.

How to maximise pallet racking for Safety & Efficiency

Proper pallet racking is fundamental to any workplace that demands efficient storage solutions. The right design and usage of a pallet racking system ensures the workspace remains organised and secure. Understanding how to use these systems effectively and efficiently is key. Dexion Pallet Racking makes it easy by providing a structured way to store materials on pallets and their Industrial pallet racks use vertical space to simplify inventory management and item retrieval.

A system setup includes upright frames, beams, and wire decking, facilitating the neat arrangement of pallets, and allowing straightforward access to stored items using forklifts or other material-handling equipment. You need to design and execute them precisely to enhance workspace functionality and protect everyone involved.

In this article, we’ll show you how to make your pallet racking safer and more effective for storage solutions.

Plan The Design and Layout For Correct Pallet Racking

Understanding the rated capacity of warehouse pallet racking prevents accidents and maintains the system’s structural integrity. The two primary capacities are the maximum unit load and the total rated capacity for each bay. Exceeding these can lead to structural failure and pose significant risks to workers and stored goods. You must mark and communicate these capacities to everyone using weight load signages displayed clearly.

Seek Guidance on Pallet Rack Modifications and Maintenance

To keep the workplace safe, it is recommended that no modifications or alterations are done to the pallet racking system. In the case that it is required, always check with the manufacturer to maintain the structural integrity and reliability of the racking system. The systems also need regular inspections to identify any signs of damage or wear and tear. Replace damaged components quickly with approved parts to ensure ongoing safety and efficiency.

Comply to Pallet Racking Operating Instructions

Establish clear operating protocols for safety and efficiency. Create guidelines for the correct use of material handling equipment. Have restrictions on unauthorised alterations. And have a clear process for reporting damage or safety concerns.

Providing comprehensive and ongoing training to employees involved in pallet racking operations is also important for minimising risks and ensuring compliance with procedures.

Identify the Suitable Pallet Type

Carefully choose the pallet type and pallet size for goods stored. Only experienced staff should review any changes in pallet design or size. This will prevent problems such as overloading, decreased stability, or damage to the storage structure.

Selected pallets must be compatible with the racking design to maintain safety and stability. A consultation with Dexion can help you work out exactly what you need.

Implement Pallet Racking Inspections & Maintenance

Encourage a culture where racking inspections are conducted regularly. This practice is essential to identify potential hazards and damages so they can be addressed promptly. Report safety concerns to the safety team and manufacturer for further remedial actions.

Pallet racking is an important component of any storage facility. Correct design, installation, and maintenance will ensure workplace safety and efficiency. By adhering to established guidelines, conducting regular inspections, and providing comprehensive training, businesses minimise risks and create a safe working environment for their employees. Safety should always be a top priority in the workplace.

Dexion is compliant to the latest global and Australian racking standards such as AS4084:2023, meeting all design and manufacturing standards.

We also actively monitor industry trends to anticipate future needs.

You can rely on Dexion for your industrial storage needs. We are committed to compliance, innovative solutions, and reliability. We ensure your warehouse racking systems meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
